About
Yalta
Yalta is a resort
town on the Crimea peninsula in Ukraine.
During the height of communism those who were privelaged enough
to have earned a rest, were sent to Yalta.
It has a reputation for being very crowded during the hot summer
months but in Autumn when the weather is still warm and pleasant
It’s a great city to explore. Protected from the North by the
mountains and warmed by the Black Sea it presents a beautiful
setting.
English is not widely spoken in the Crimea, but it is understood
by most young people. Historical sites such as Livadia Palace,
summer home of the last of the Russian Tsar’s, or the uniquely
elegant building of Alupka Palace looking out over the Black Sea
to Turkey from the South face and resembling a Scottish castle
from it’s north face. Further along the coast the famous
“Swallow’s Nest” perched high up on the edge of a rock on the
cliff face. Sevastopol for years closed to foreigner’s was the
home of the Russian Black Sea fleet with it’s secret submarine
base, set deep in an underground cave. It is now open to
visitor’s. Of course many battle sites abound and the most
famous is at Balaklava where the “Charge of the Light Brigade “
into the valley of death rode the ill-fated British Cavalry.
